We
regularly hold a regional contest as part of the national and
international Rose of Tralee contest. This year's Regional Selection
will occur on Saturday 24 April at the HV Irish Society.
The criteria for the selection of a Hutt Valley
Rose of Tralee are very simple - contestants must be:
*
at least 18 years of age, and under 27 years
of age
*
not married nor a parent
*
of Irish birth or descent
*
have been resident in New Zealand for at least
12 months
They are judged over the course of interviews and
during an on-stage appearance at a social gathering.
This social function is normally held at the HVIS
premises, and is a good, old-fashioned Irish function - good music,
fine food, grand craic, and of course the Roses.
In 2009 the Hutt Valley Irish Society selected LUCY
McAULIFFE as its Rose of Tralee.
Lucy
was born on 25 June 1986 in London, England.
She is currently an Associate Recruitment
Consultant.
She lists her principal interests as gym and
fitness, watching sport, especially rugby, volunteer work,
reading and movies. When younger she was a keen Irish dancing
student.
Lucy’s father was born in rural southern Limerick.
Lucy has a number of cousins, aunts and uncles in the area,
and her grandmother still lives on the family farm.
Lucy was selected by our judges at the Regional
Selection evening on May 9.
The members present agreed that the choice
facing the judges wasn’t an easy one.
A good crowd was present at the Clubrooms,
and the audience was in good spirits, enjoying the challenge
of evaluating the variety of abilities, talents, and personalities
of the contestants.
The Irish community in the greater Wellington
region is truly in good heart when it has young women such
as Aislinn it can call it’s own!
In 2008 the Hutt Valley Irish Society selected Aislinn
Ryan as its Rose of Tralee. Like Emma Coffey, Esther Budding
and Vivien Lynch before her, Aislinn went on to win the National
Title and represented New Zealand with distinction at the International
Festival.
In 2006 the Hutt Valley Irish Society selected Emma
Coffey as its Rose of Tralee. Like Esther Budding and Vivien
Lynch, Emma went on to win the National Title and represented
New Zealand with distinction at the International Festival.
In 2005 the Hutt Valley Irish Society selected Esther
Budding as its Rose of Tralee. Esther went on to win the National
Title, and then to represent New Zealand in Ireland.
In 2002 Vivien Lynch
was selected as our Rose, and went on to win the National
Title. Her prize included a trip to the International Festival
and final in Tralee, Ireland. You can read about her experiences
at the Festival HERE.
