Did you know?

Rose of Tralee

We regularly hold a regional contest as part of the national and international Rose of Tralee contest.

The criteria for the selection of a Hutt Valley Rose of Tralee are very simple - contestants must be:

* at least 18 years of age, and under 26 years of age
* not married nor a parent
* of Irish birth or origin

They are judged over the course of interviews and during an on-stage appearance at a social gathering.

This social function is normally held at the HVIS premises, and is a good, old-fashioned Irish function - good music, fine food, grand craic, and of course the Roses.

In 2008 the Hutt Valley Irish Society selected AISLINN RYAN as its Rose of Tralee.

Aislinn was born on 13 October 1984 in Wellington.

She is currently a student, studying English literature and Media Studies.

Aislinn says she loves Irish dancing (both teaching and performing) and travel. Until Christmas ‘07 she toured with Riverdance, performing as Female Lead from August ’05. After 4 years living from a suitcase, she says she gets immense pleasure from making a cup of tea in her own kitchen! She also loves to read, write and enjoy Wellington’s cultural delights – film, theatre, and of course fresh coffee.

She is of Irish descent rather than birth. Aislinn’s father was born and raised in Cahir, Co Tipperary. His parents were both born in Co Tipperary – the Ryans from Cahir and the Longs from Thurles. Aislinn’s father emigtared to NZ in 1967.

Aislinn was selected by our judges at the Regional Selection evening on April 26.

The members present agreed that the choice facing the judges wasn’t an easy one.

A good crowd was present at the Clubrooms, and the audience was in good spirits, enjoying the challenge of evaluating the variety of abilities, talents, and personalities of the contestants.

The Irish community in the greater Wellington region is truly in good heart when it has young women such as Aislinn it can call it’s own!
